Kate and Mary visit shelter to see early years work

The Duchess of Cambridge wrapped up her two-day visit to Denmark with a joint visit to the Danner Crisis Centre alongside Crown Princess Mary.

The Danner Crisis Centre bills itself as a feminist organisation that works to “eliminate violence against women by empowerment, and by protection, prevention and advocacy.

“Violence against women and girls is the single worst violation of human rights. To fight this global and gender-based injustice, we must stand together against violence.”

Danner Crisis Centre was founded in 1875 by the Countess Danner, who was married to Frederik VII (as a morganatic spouse) and bequeathed her assets to building a foundation that supported working-class women. In the late 1970s, its mission changed to support women against domestic violence and continues to support women and girls through this aim today.

In a social media post, Kensington Palace wrote: “We’ve seen both in the UK as well as here, how early childhood trauma can impact later life outcomes.

“And how the importance of supportive relationships, environments and experiences are vital to helping create positive outcomes for those experience trauma.

“Organisations like the Danner Crisis Centre showcase the benefits of community support once more in building nurturing relationships.”

The Danner Crisis Centre is supported by the Mary Foundation, the eponymous foundation started by the Crown Princess in 2007, which aims to combat loneliness, bullying, and support women and girls.

The Danish Royal House shared on social media that at the Centre, “The Crown Princess will show The Duchess how a backpack given to children at the country’s shelters creates the starting point for a discussion with the children about the difficult experiences they have had.

“The Mary Foundation’s wide-ranging work with strengthening children’s mental health is also embraced by The Duchess, who established The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood last year.”

Earlier today, Kate met with Queen Margrethe and Crown Princess Mary for lunch at Amalienborg Palace to celebrate the joint jubilees taking place in both countries: Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee.

This is Kate’s first overseas visit to support the work of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. Kensington Palace previously said that Kate’s trip would be a learning mission as “Denmark is a beacon of best practice with its approach to early childhood as well as consistently ranking near the top of countries with the happiest people in the world.”
