The House of Windsor’s May Babies

May has already got plenty of royal history going for it. That said, you can never have too much of a good thing and now the merriest month will give the House of Windsor even more cause for celebration as Baby Sussex prepares to make their debut. It’s a matter of days now until the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrives and they will be a May baby. The Windsors already have a right royal collection of people born in month number five. And they may well be about to welcome their newest member – here are the May babies of the House of Windsor.

Queen Mary

The matriarch of the House of Windsor was a May baby. Born Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes on May 26th 1867 at Kensington Palace, she was known by her family as May.

Chosen by Queen Victoria as an ideal consort, she was engaged firstly to Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, who died six weeks after their betrothal. She later married his younger brother and she became queen on his accession as George V on May 6th 1910. Among their six children were two future kings, Edward VIII and George VI.

Lady Sarah Chatto

The Queen’s niece was another Kensington Palace baby, born there on May 1st 1964. Sarah Frances Elizabeth was the second child and only daughter of Princess Margaret and her husband, Antony, Earl of Snowdon.

Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones spent a lot of time with her royal cousins while growing up and is among Prince Harry’s godparents. She married Daniel Chatto in 1994 and the couple has two grown up sons, Samuel and Arthur.

Autumn Phillips

A Windsor by marriage, Autumn Patricia Kelly was born on May 3rd 1978 in Montreal. She was working as a management consultant when she met the Queen’s eldest grandchild, Peter Phillips, and the couple married on May 17th 2008.

They now have two daughters – Savannah (born 2010) and Isla (2012).

Zara Tindall

A successful equestrian, she has an Olympic silver medal to her name and was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2006 after becoming Eventing World Champion. She married Mike Tindall in 2011 and now has two daughters, Mia (born in 2014) and Lena (2018).

Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones

The younger child and only daughter of David and Serena, now Earl and Countess of Snowdon, Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne was born on May 14th 2002.

Her arrival came just three months after the death of her paternal grandmother, Princess Margaret, and weeks after the passing of her great grandmother, the Queen Mother. She was named in honour of both of them.

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born on May 2nd 2015 at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington and made her debut in front of the cameras hours later as her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, took her home to Kensington Palace.

Fourth in line to the throne, she is the most senior royal so far to benefit from a change to the laws of succession which means younger brothers can’t overtake older sisters in the royal pecking order.

And now all eyes are on Windsor to see which date in May gets its own place in the regal history books as the great wait for Baby Sussex continues.
