Multiple stabbings occurred in two Saskatchewan communities on Sunday 4 September, with 11 dead and 18 wounded following the attacks on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby community of Weldon. Thirteen crime scenes were located in the two areas.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced it was searching for two suspects over the long weekend, however as of publication, one suspect has been found dead while the other remains on the run.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also released a message over the weekend, writing: “I am shocked and devastated by the horrific attacks today in James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon, Saskatchewan, that claimed the lives of 10 people and injured many more. As Canadians, we mourn with everyone affected by this tragic violence, and with the people of Saskatchewan. We also wish a full and quick recovery to those injured.”

He further thanked first responders for their work in tracking the suspects and treating the injured and the victims and added: “The Government of Canada has been in direct communication with the James Smith Cree Nation community leadership and we are ready to assist in any way we can. Those responsible for today’s abhorrent attacks must be fully brought to justice. To James Smith Cree Nation and the people of Saskatchewan: You are in our thoughts. We are here to support you during this difficult time.”
