The Duchess of Cornwall says queen consort title will help with her important causes

The Duchess of Cornwall has spoken publicly about how the title of queen consort will help the causes she supports when she takes on the title.

In an interview with Woman’s Hour and BBC Breakfast earlier this week at Clarence House, Camilla said that “Of course it’s a great honour, it couldn’t be anything else. But it does help it. I’m going to keep up with these causes.

“You know if I start something like this, I’m not going to, to give up mid-channel, I’m just going to keep going to try and help people like Diana [Parkes]. I hope I should be doing it for a lifetime.”

Camilla was joined in the interview with Diana Parkes, mother of a murdered woman who was killed by her estranged husband within earshot of their children in 2010. The royal said that meeting Parkes led to her interest in the topic of domestic violence and the story of her daughter inspired her to do “anything I can” to raise awareness of the issue.

Camilla noted that domestic violence cases were on the rise during the pandemic but that at the same time, the period of lockdown “also brought out things into the open that we wouldn’t have necessarily talked about before… and I think, with domestic abuse, this is exactly what happened.”

The duchess said that to prevent domestic violence and ensure that it’s eradicated, education on the topic must begin early. She said that, “I think children at school have got to be taught respect. We have got to go back to the beginnings and just build up this idea that you have to have respect for human beings, it’s lack of respect. It’s treating women like chattels and people thinking they can get away with it.”

Camilla also spoke of how The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be a cause for celebration in June, noting: “It’s always lovely to have something happy to look forward to, isn’t it? I mean, we’ve all been through hard times. We’ve all been locked away from our family and friends. And now we could all get together again and celebrate.”
