Theresa May & Jeremy Corbyn congratulate The Queen & Prince Philip on their 70 years of marriage

The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition took the opportunity to congratulate The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh on their 70th wedding anniversary on Wednesday during the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Theresa May kicked off PMQs with the congratulatory message to the Monarch, with a cheer from MPs.

She added that the couple “have devoted their lives to the service of our country.”

Wednesday was likely the last time that Mrs May would speak from the Dispatch Box before next week’s PMQs meaning she is among the first to offer her wishes to Her Majesty and Prince Philip.

Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn also congratulated The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on their platinum wedding anniversary.

The Queen and Prince Philip will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary behind closed doors in private.

The 91-year old Monarch and her 96-year-old husband will celebrate the occasion with their family and will hold a dinner at Windsor Castle.

The Queen will be treated to a rare day away from work, with no visits or public engagements taking place on November 20 – the date of their anniversary.

More than 2,000 guests attended the Royal Wedding on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. As the first Royal event since World War II ended, the wedding was a countrywide celebration.

The Royal couple’s honeymoon took place in Hampshire located at the Broadlands home which was owned by Lord Mountbatten, Philip’s uncle. They also spent time at Birkhall on the Balmoral Estate.
