Four-time Olympic gold medal winner and world record holder Mo Farah has received a knighthood from the Queen.
Sir Mo Farah was honoured at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace this Tuesday for his services to athletics.
Mo Farah commented on receiving his knighthood saying “I’m so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight.”
Originally born in Somalia, Farah moved to London at a young age. He will soon be returning to London from the United States to concentrate on road marathons. He retired from track races after the recent championships held in London in which he won gold in the 10,000m and silver in the 5,000m
Sir Farah was surprised at receiving the award saying: “Over the years you dream of becoming something or doing something in your career, to take it the highest level and become an Olympic champion that was always the dream”
“As an eight-year-old coming from Somalia and not speaking a word of English, to be recognised by your country, it is incredible”
While being given the honour by the Queen, Sir Farah said that the Queen told him he had been “going too long”. She asked whether he had retired.
Sir Farah replied saying “No, I am going to run the London Marathon- I want to go into roads.” Sir Farah said the Queen said that was “marvellous”
Sir Farah is Britain’s most decorated athlete. He has won four gold medals in the Olympic games, 6 in the world Championships and nine other gold medals across a variety of competitions. He was the first British athlete to win two gold medals at the same world championships.
Also due to receive honours are Delia Smith for her service to cookery and Rosa Monckton, who was a friend of Princess Diana. She will be receiving an MBE for voluntary and charitable services to people with learning difficulties and their families.
