Sunday, 8 September will mark the second anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. Following the formal state funeral at Westminster Abbey, the late Queen was buried in a chapel close to her heart.
A much smaller committal service was held at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle after the funeral at Westminster Abbey on 19 September 2022. She was then buried in the Royal Vault in the King George VI Memorial Chapel in St. George’s Chapel. The burial was solely attended by King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other close family members.
The late Queen was buried beside her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as well as her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The ashes of her sister, Princess Margaret, are also interred in the small chapel.
Queen Elizabeth commissioned the chapel in 1962 and it was finally completed in 1969, specifically designed to hold three monarchs (as well as their consorts).
St. George’s Chapel was founded in the mid-fourteenth century by King Edward III. However, it was completely redesigned in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
Eleven reigning British monarchs have been buried in St. George’s Chapel, as well as several spouses including Queen Mary of Teck, Queen Alexandra of Denmark, and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
