Shirley Bassey and Gary Barlow to Open Queen’s Birthday Concert

A star-studded performance at the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations will be led by Dame Shirley Bassey and Gary Barlow.

The event, held over four nights, will be hosted by Ant and Dec in the private grounds of Windsor Castle on 15 May. It will revisit highlights of the sovereign’s eventful life, from her birth in 1926 to the Second World War and her coronation 1953, which ushered in more than six decades in service.

Ant and Dec said, ‘’We are honoured to be hosting this special celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday.

‘’This spectacular evening will bring together some of the best known names in the entertainment world who will perform with 900 horses and 1,500 participants to mark this very special birthday.’’

Several other figures from the world of entertainment will be attending the special concert. The list includes Opera singer Katherine Jenkins, tenor and actor Alfie Boe, The Billions and Homeland star Damian Lewis and Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren, who played the Queen on more than one occasion.

It won’t be a particularly new experience for Dame Shirley, who was recognised by Her Majesty for services to the performing arts in 2000. Shirley was one of a prestigious line-up artists who performed at the Queen’s 50th Jubilee Party at Buckingham Palace. She also introduced her new song, The Living Tree, during her appearance at the Royal Variety Performance, attended by the monarch.

Take That lead vocalist Barlow, meanwhile, was selected to compose the Queen’s official Diamond Jubilee single Sing, alongside famous compose Andrew Lloyd Webber. This time around, he is expected to perform Something About This Night from his musical Finding Neverland.

Military bands from the Commonwealth and other countries will also feature in the event, with The Oman Royal Cavalry, Chilean Huasos and Dnacer, The South Australian Police Band, The Fijian Forces Band and Dancers all expected to prepare their own shows.

The event will be broadcast on ITV.
