Queen Elizabeth II

Just what the doctor ordered – The Queen enjoys a winner over jumps as she battles Covid

The Queen won a maiden hurdle at Newbury Racecourse, just hours after Buckingham Palace announced that the 95-year-old monarch had tested positive for Covid-19.

Her Majesty was no doubt cheering on Kincardine from home at Windsor Castle as the horse jumped to victory under jockey Nico de Boinville.

The Queen is well known for her many successes as a racehorse owner, with Her Majesty winning many of the biggest races on the flat, including the Oaks, the 2000 Guineas and the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Her interest in National Hunt racing over obstacles is less prolific, with Kincardine’s success on Sunday providing The Queen with a rare winner over jumps.

The horse is trained by Nicky Henderson who was formerly Principal Trainer to The Queen Mother.

Whereas The Queen’s interests lie mostly in flat racing, her mother was one of jump racings biggest champions.

She had well over 400 wins as an owner until her death in 2002, and was a regular face at the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National.

Kincardine’s victory on Sunday was The Queen’s first win over jumps since May 2021.
