Queen Camilla pays tribute at the Field of Remembrance

Queen Camilla led the commemorations at the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, her first service as queen consort.

The Field of Remembrance has been held annually since 1928, presented by the Poppy Factory, of which Queen Camilla is patron.

During the service, the Dean of Westminster gave an address: “For the 94th time at the Field of Remembrance, we meet again to remember those who gave their lives in the conflicts of our time, that we might enjoy freedom and peace.

“At the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918, the First World War ended: that date, that time, have become a symbolic moment on which to pause in silent remembrance and gratitude. With full hearts at this, our Field of Remembrance, let us pray for the peace of the whole world.”

Queen Camilla laid a cross of remembrance with her new royal cypher for the first time, positioned near two wooden crosses erected in front of the Graves of Unknown British soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars.

The musical accompaniment of ‘Last Post’ was performed by the Scots Guard.

Queen Camilla was reportedly very moved after viewing a new plot at the Field of Remembrance dedicated in memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The temporary plot created in memory of Queen Elizabeth II features two black-and-white photographs of the monarch at the Field of Remembrance, once in the 1940s and once in 2002, alongside a cross with poppies that reads: “In Memorium. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. 1926 – 1922.”

The President of the Poppy Factory, Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis, told reporters, “The Queen Consort was very moved and thought it was a lovely touch and said she was looking forward to seeing it filled with flowers.”

Queen Camilla met with veterans and military representatives before departing. The Field of Remembrance is open to the public until 20 November and features over 70,000 crosses erected in honour of those who served.
