Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall start tour of Australia tomorrow

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are set to officially begin their royal tour of Australia tomorrow when they land in Queensland to commence engagements supporting the Commonwealth Games. During their stay the royal couple are due to visit Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Cairns and Bundaberg.

Following their arrival down under the couple will receive an official welcome in Brisbane when a 21-gun salute is launched at the Old Government House at approximately 12.50pm. This will be followed by a walking tour of the City Botanic Gardens where Prince Charles and the Duchess will have the opportunity to meet and greet members of the public.

The royals will end their afternoon engagements with a visit to Lady Cilento’s Children’s Hospital where they will meet individuals involved with Juiced TV, Australia’s first television program made by hospital patients.

The first day of the tour will end with the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, where Prince Charles will represent his mother, The Queen.

The second day of the royal visit will involve a tour of the Athletes’ Village followed by the swimming finals at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre where Prince Charles will present the medals.

On Friday the Prince of Wales will travel to Bundaberg to attend The Big Bundy BBQ, a community celebration at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery hosted by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. Prince Charles will also travel to Cairns to visit the HMAS Cairns where he will present the Gloucester Cup to the company of HMAS Leeuwin in recognition of their achievement of providing the highest level of overall proficiency.

Before completing his visit to Queensland, Prince Charles will watch the Commonwealth Games women’s basketball competition in Cairns – meeting the teams afterwards – and will attend a celebration marking the 90th anniversary of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in addition to visiting Daintree Rainforest to learn about the rainforest’s unique ecosystem.
