Prince Philip

The Duke of Edinburgh will not attend Battle of Jutland Commemorations following medical advice

It has been announced that The Duke of Edinburgh will no longer attend commemorations to mark the Battle of Jutland in Orkney following medical advice.

Prince Philip was scheduled to attend the commemorations alongside other members of the Royal Family, including Princess Anne, on May 31.

Buckingham Palace have not specified what is wrong with the Duke, who celebrates his 95th birthday next month, but it is understood that there are no plans to cancel any other engagements this week and he has not been admitted to hospital.

The Queen’s husband was last seen in public last Thursday  during the ceremony of Beating Retreat.

He is said to be disappointed that he is unable to attend the commemorations.

The Battle of Jutland saw the main fleets of the British and German navies clash on the eastern side of the North Sea on 31st May, 1916. It was the largest naval battle of World War I and played a decisive role in the allied victory two years later.

The Orkney Islands served as the main base for the Royal Navy during the First World War and will be the major focal point for the anniversary ceremony. On 31 May, Prince Philip will attend a service at St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. Following the mass, the Prince will join a ceremony at Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery in Hoy.

110,000 sailors in 150 British and 100 German vessels fought for control of the waters and, despite losing 6,000 sailors with many others burned or wounded, the British maintained command of the sea.

The Princess Royal will still be attending the commemorations in Orkney representing the Royal Family, and The Duke of Kent will attend a Memorial Service for the at the German Naval Memorial in Laboe, Germany.
