Meet Missis Kwin, Head of State in Papua New Guinea

As Britain’s monarch and Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty The Queen holds a number of titles and some might be more familiar than others. Ahead of The Princess Royal’s visit to Papua New Guinea in honour of the Platinum Jubilee, Royal Central is looking at the Queen’s title there. In Papua New Guinea Elizabeth II is known as Missis Kwin.

The Queen is Head of State in the South Pacific country. As well as “Missis Kwin” she is also known there as ‘Mama belong big family’. Both titles are in Tok Pisin – the creole language spoken throughout the 600-plus islands which make up the sovereign state.

Throughout her reign, Her Majesty has been supported in her role by other members of the royal family who have visited the country, and who continue to celebrate and reward the achievements of its citizens.

When it comes to day-to-day issues, she is represented by a Governor-General who carries out the duties of Head of State. While she does not get directly involved in Government matters, Her Majesty plays an important symbolic role.

The Queen has been the current monarch of Papua New Guinea since 16 September 1975 when the country became fully independent.

When it comes to succession, Papua New Guinea defers to United Kingdom law meaning the Prince of Wales will take on the Head of State role when the time comes.

The Princess Royal will travel to the country in honour of the Platinum Jubilee. Her brother and heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales travelled in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee.
