King Charles III

The Prince of Wales sets a ‘children’s challenge’ to mark Earth Day

The Prince of Wales is challenging young people around the world to design their dream future with nature at its heart.

Prince Charles has set the challenge to mark Earth Day 2022.

In a video message, he calls on children and young people to ”draw, paint or write about” the future they want to see. He asks them to put the natural world at the centre of their vision.

His call comes as he read the forward to a book for young people called ‘It’s Up To Us’ which explains his Terra Carta and its focus on nature, people and the planet. The book, by Christopher Lloyd, was published in the UK in 2021 and is now being launched in the US and China.

Prince Charles says ”Take out a blank piece of paper and draw, paint or write about the future you would like to see. One that puts nature at the heart of everything we do. That way we can share our ideas with as many people as possible. And together we can help make our planet strong and healthy for generations to come.”

The book was inspired by work being done around sustainability by the Prince’s Foundation at Dumfries House in Scotland.

The challenge comes as another of the Foundation’s environmental projects reaches a major milestone. In 2021, it launched the pilot Food for the Future programme which focuses on giving young people a view of how the food system works so they can understand its impact on the environment. Experts in food production and cookery gave 48 school pupils advice and lessons in making their food consumption more sustainable. That first project comes to a close on April 25th 2022 and the Foundation now plans to extend it further.
