Some of the most famous portraits of Britain’s queens are to be brought together in a special exhibition to mark the Platinum Jubilee.
Sotheby’s is hosting the exhibition which focuses on the history of the monarchy. It will see dozens of pictures, including several in private ownership that are rarely seen by the public, brought together as The Queen celebrates the 70th anniversary of her reign.
Among the portraits going on show is the famous Andy Warhol pop art image of The Queen, created in 1985. One of the most celebrated paintings of the first Elizabeth, the Armada Portrait, is also included in the exhibition, on loan from Woburn Abbey.
The only portrait of Mary, Queen of Scots will feature in the exhibition – it is in a private collection and hasn’t been seen publicly for many years. Another rare painting, of Mary II, is also in the display.
The exhibition also contains documents and artefacts showing other aspects of the history of the Monarchy including warrants and book bindings. Over forty tiaras, loaned by aristocratic families, will also feature in the show.
Sotheby’s Director of Early British Paintings, Julian Gascoigne, said ”it will be interesting to see…how the same themes of royal power and female authority are played out through the centuries.”
The London auction house, which is a partner of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, will host the exhibition from May 28th until June 15th 2022 and it’s free to enter.
Sotheby’s is hosting a series of other events marking the celebrations as part of its Jubilee Festival.
