Ivanka Trump congratulates Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Twitter is not happy

Ivanka Trump probably wasn’t anticipating the backlash she received after congratulating Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their engagement, but Twitter was not having it.

Trump, who congratulated the couple nearly three weeks after their 27 November engagement – instead waiting for the wedding date to be announced on 15 December – found herself criticised.

Over two tweets, Trump wrote, “Wishing Meghan and Prince Harry a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness together. I have no doubt that this couple will do extraordinary things, both individually and collectively. Congratulations!”

One user replied, “They still don’t like you, sweetie.”

Another replied, “Hoo boy. It’s so transparent that you’re practically begging for a royal wedding invite. Not gonna happen princess.”

A reply to that tweet stated, “Please don’t insult the term princess by using it in the same sentence as Ivanka.”

One user even replied with a gif of Prince Harry and former First Lady Michelle Obama leaning in towards each other to talk and dissolving into laughter.

Users were quick to condemn Trump for what they perceived as her angling for an invite to the 19 May wedding. They were also quick to compare the “nepotism” of the Trump children compared to Prince William and Prince Harry.

Of course, Trump also had her own supporters join the fray tweeting, “Please ignore all the haters out there,” and “Shame on you, you bullies!”

The likelihood of President Trump – or any member of the Trump family – scoring an invite is slim. Meghan Markle has been a vocal critic of the President in the past, and given that Prince Harry will be sixth in line to the throne by the time of his wedding, the need to invite foreign heads of state – especially given that Prince William’s wedding didn’t include the Obamas on the guest list – will be just about nil.

It is likely though that the Obamas will score an invite to Prince Harry’s wedding, given the close relationship the Prince shares with the former president and his wife.

As of today, Ivanka is the only member of the Trump family to congratulate the couple publicly. The Twitter-obsessed President has surprisingly remained mum.
