Coronation stamps reflect King Charles III’s lifelong work

Four new stamps have been released to mark the Coronation of King Charles III and they have a very personal touch.

Some of the most important areas of His Majesty’s lifelong work are featured on the stamps, only the third special set ever released to mark a Coronation.

All four have a striking look as they are based on wood engravings. These were commissioned specially from artist Andrew Davidson while Atelier Works designed the stamps.

Among the areas highlighted are sustainability and biodiversity with a stamp showing renewable energy, traditional crafts and sustainable farming.

Another focuses on diversity and community with representatives of many major faiths, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam, depicted alongside representations of rural and urban Britain.

The Commonwealth also takes a lead role in these stamps with one showing a Commonwealth meeting, flags and an imagining of the Commonwealth Games.

The first class stamp shows King Charles being crowned with Westminster Abbey in the background and celebrations, including fireworks and street parties, in the background.

The stamps go on pre-order on April 28 and will be available to buy in Post Offices from May 6th 2023, the date of the Coronation.

As they were unveiled, the Chief Executive of Royal Mail, Simon Thompson said ‘‘Royal Mail is proud to issue this set of commemorative stamps which celebrate the Coronation, and some of the causes which His Majesty has championed throughout his many years of public service. This is only the third time we have issued Coronation stamps and I am delighted that they mark the start of a new reign and a new chapter in our history.”

Between April 28th and May 10th there will also be a special postmark on letters and parcels handled by Royal Mail which will read ”Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, 6 May 2023”

The stamps are also now on show at the Postal Museum as part of a new exhibition called ”The King’s Stamp”.

Postal stamps were introduced in England in 1840 but special Coronation stamps have only ever been made before for two previous ceremonies – those of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and King George VI in 1937.
