The Prince and Princess of Wales took a leap into the future as they spent time with the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team by abseiling a cliff.
William and Catherine shared on social media: “It was great to spend time learning the ropes with these wonderful volunteers.”
The royal couple, notoriously competitive at sporting engagements, abseiled down a cliff at Brecon Beacons. William was overheard telling Catherine, “Come on then are we going to abseil or stand around talking.” Catherine was overheard replying, “We’re not racing.”
William is patron of Mountain Rescue England and Wales. The Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team is entirely volunteer-run and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week providing support to the areas of mid and south Wales.
The royal couple also took part in training exercises with the team, including medical support exercises—where the couple worked together over radio to get the supplies together for a dummy they then had to rescue via stretcher—and a search dog rescue demonstration.
Before leaving, William and Catherine met many of the volunteers within the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team to learn more about the work they do and their experiences with rescuing people.
As a goodwill gesture, the royal couple purchased £120 worth of pizza from the Little Dragon Pizza Van—including three barbecue chicken pizzas, three pepperoni pizzas, three goat cheese pizzas, and three margherita pizzas—and delivered them to the Dowlais Rugby Club, where members of the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team go to socialise after hours.
“Anyone for Pizza?” William and Catherine shared on social media, adding, in Welsh: “Pwy sy eisiau pizza?”
“Thank you for having us for a drink and a chat about life in the community here in Dowlais!” they added.
William and Catherine are in Wales for two days of engagements.
