Queen Camilla is the new Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.
Her Majesty takes over a role left vacant after the Duke of York was forced to give up all his military appointments.
The Monarch is always the Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards. Queen Camilla is known as the Regimental Colonel.
The role has been held by other consorts, including Prince Philip and Prince Albert.
Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II served as Regimental Colonel for ten years while heir to the throne. Her appointment in 1942 was the first time a woman had taken the role.
The announcement of Queen Camilla’s new role came as first details of the first Trooping the Colour of the reign of King Charles III were revealed.
The Sovereign’s Birthday Parade will take place on June 17th 2023 with thousands of military taking part in the ceremonial at Horse Guards Parade in central London.
It will be the first time King Charles III has marked an Official Birthday and the first time he has taken the salute as Monarch. He did take the salute in 2022 on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.
Following Trooping, the Royal Family will return along the Mall to Buckingham Palace for a balcony appearance and a flypast by the RAF.
