2017 has been an exciting year for feminism. Women have supported each other as many brave ladies (and some men) have found their voices against their abusers, New Zealand’s new Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, is only 37-years-old, and Saudi Arabia is finally allowing women to drive.
As the engagement of Meghan Markle to Prince Harry was announced, some found the need to pick a side; Team Meghan or Team Kate, rather than see them as a united front.
There is no doubt that Meghan will need a helping hand as she navigates the murky waters of the world’s most famous family, and there is no one better to do that than her future sister-in-law who was in her shoes six years ago.
As part of the Royal Family, Meghan will have to pick her platforms of what causes she will support; it has also been announced that Meghan will be the fourth patron of The Royal Foundation.
The two ladies will use their positions to make a difference in this world, and that should be celebrated. Sooner, rather than later, we will have to face the fact that The Queen will no longer be with us and the Head of the Commonwealth countries will once again be male – a trend that will last for at least the next three monarchs. Strong female subjects in The Firm will be essential, not only for the monarchy to stay current but for the youth of today growing up with a role model.
These women have degrees, are kind, compassionate and spend their time raising the awareness of charities. Young people need someone to look up to that isn’t a Hollywood celebrity.
According to the Pew Research Centre, seven-in-ten Americans use social media. Youth are subject to unrestricted influence and with that type of pressure Team MegKate could, or rather, will be the guiding light to young ladies.
So, why pit these women against each other when, together, they are going to accomplish so much more? Ultimately, creating the new face of feminism.
