Kappa Kappa Gamma sends their congratulations to Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle was a Kappa Kappa Gamma (ΚΚΓ or KKG) at Northwestern University in Illinois during her university years where she earned a degree in theatre and international relations. The sorority sent their congratulations to their sister from the national Kappa Kappa Gamma page saying, “We are pleased to learn of Meghan Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry and send best wishes for a lifetime of happiness! Meghan was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Upsilon Chapter, Northwestern, from 2000 – 2003. We hope Meghan remembers her something blue (and blue) on her special day!

Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded in 1870 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. It focuses on raising awareness and funds for the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation (which provides money for KKG centred museums, scholarships, leadership programming, educational programming and Rose McGill fund) and for their national philanthropy of Reading is Fundamental.

As a member of the sorority, Meghan would have worked each year to raise money for the aforementioned topics, as well as partake in other Greek charitable fundraisers at Northwestern. Being a sister of a sorority is a lifetime commitment, and it is safe to assume there will be some KKG touches during the reception of their wedding – whether that be a song played that has a special meaning to Kappa sisters or something else.

As a fellow member of the Greek community (I was a Sigma Kappa at the University of Tennessee), I can attest that sororities and fraternities raise some of the most money per year for the charities of their choice. They are passionate about the causes close to their hearts, and people should not believe the standard stereotypes or those in the minority in the news lately bringing a bad light on the Greek community.

Northwestern University, very proud of their alumna, said on their Facebook, “An accomplished actress, humanitarian and women’s rights advocate, Northwestern University School of Communication alumna Meghan Markle ’03 is already royalty in our eyes. Northwestern extends its congratulations and #PurplePride!”

They also shared their joy on their Instagram with a composite photo of Meghan from the KKG archives.

One of her former professors, Harvey Young, who had her in his “Studies in Black Performance” told the Chicago Sun-Times about having her in class saying, “She reminded me of a lot of our other very promising alumni, in that she was passionate about theater and really had a sense of self-confidence that you could imagine would allow her to weather the storms of the professional world.”
