The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Sajid Javid as Her Majesty’s Principal Secretary of State for the Home Department.
Mr Javid was appointed to the role of Home Secretary on Monday morning following the resignation of Amber Rudd on Sunday evening.
The 48-year-old MP is the first BAME person to be appointed to the role. He was previously Secretary of State for Housing and Local Communities.
Replacing him in this brief is former Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire.
Mr Brokenshire was forced to resign from Cabinet in January following a cancer scare, however, this appointment signals his return to frontbench politics.
The Home Secretary is one of the most senior officials in the British government and is one of the Great Offices of State.
However, the position is also a perilous one. Of the last seven Home Secretaries, four resigned, one was sacked, one lost their position in an election, and one, Theresa May, went on to become Prime Minister.
The previous Home Secretary, Amber Rudd, phoned the Prime Minister on Sunday evening to tender her resignation.
She faced calls to resign over allegations that she misled parliament in relation to the Windrush scandal and immigration targets.
Others widely tipped for the role included James Brokenshire, Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley.
