The Queen appoints Thérèse Coffey as Deputy Prime Minister

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Thérèse Coffey as the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister following a recommendation from new PM Liz Truss.

Dr Coffey is one of Liz Truss’s closest friends and political allies, and acted as her campaign manager for the leadership of the Conservative Party.

Previously the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions under Boris Johnson, Dr Coffey has also been appointed as Health Secretary, a role she will hold in tandem with that of Deputy PM.

Thérèse Coffey is the new Prime Minister’s closest ally, and is seen by many in Westminster as her ‘fixer’, arranging her leadership bid behind the scenes.

The two women entered politics together in 2010, and have both served in government for a number of years.

Other senior appointments include Kwasi Kwarteng, who becomes the Chancellor of the Exchequer in charge of the UK’s Treasury Department.

Suella Braverman becomes Home Secretary, and James Cleverly is the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.

The Queen asked Liz Truss to form a government on Tuesday morning following her election as leader of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party.

Ms Truss, who arrived at Balmoral alongside her husband, Hugh O’Leary, ‘kissed hands’ with the monarch and is now the Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.

The 47-year-old politician is the 15th Prime Minister of Her Majesty’s reign, following the resignation of Boris Johnson just an hour before the appointment of Truss.
