Tower Bridge lights up purple to pay final tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

As a mark of respect and to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, London’s iconic Tower Bridge has been majestically illuminated in purple this weekend, until Monday 19th September, the day of Her Late Majesty’s State Funeral.

A total of nine bridges spanning the length of the river Thames in London have been lit up in purple as a tribute.

A number of other landmarks in London and around the world have also been lit up in purple since Her Late Majesty died on the 8th September, including Westminster Bridge, Liverpool’s Liver Building, Sydney’s Opera House and New York’s Empire Sate Building.

The colour purple along with platinum played a significant part within The Queens final year, with it being the symbolic backdrop for her Platinum Jubilee emblem during the summer. These colours were specifically chosen as they correspond with The Queen’s Coronation Gown and Robe of Estate. Therefore, it only seems fitting that this would be the colour to commemorate Britain’s longest reigning monarch.
