The Queen’s maternal family sends their condolences on her death

The maternal family of the late Queen Elizabeth II have joined the world in paying tribute to the life and legacy of Britain’s longest reigning Monarch.

The Bowes Lyon Family, whose family seat is Glamis Castle, released a statement on their official Twitter account that read: “The Bowes Lyon family join with people across the world in mourning the loss of Her Majesty The Queen. Her steadfastness, wisdom and humour will be profoundly missed and she will always be remembered with great fondness at the Scottish home of her maternal grandparents.”

Elizabeth II was the daughter of Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, who was herself the daughter of Lord Glamis, Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. After her 1923 wedding to the future George VI, the couple spent part of their honeymoon at Glamis Castle.

Perhaps, outside its current royal connection, Glamis Castle is most famous for its Shakespearean connection, as an inspiration for Macbeth in the eponymous play.

The castle was the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and is where the late Princess Margaret was born in August 1930. Elizabeth II was known to be a frequent visitor as a child.

According to Glamis Castle’s official website, “The princesses enjoyed many happy times at Glamis during their childhood playing games and having picnics in the castle grounds and on the estate. Their love of horses was also nurtured on the idyllic setting of Glamis.”
