Australia has served as the backdrop for many iconic fashion moments over the decades, with Queen Elizabeth II, the Princess of Wales, and Queen Mary of Denmark all making sartorial statements while visiting.
Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II wore a gold tulle Norman Hartnell gown during her 1954 tour to Australia that would become known as the “Wattle Gown” due to the gold embroidered wattle detailing on the skirt. She wore the gown to a state banquet in Sydney on 4 February 1954 and again when sitting for Sir William Dargie’s portrait.
The Princess of Wales
During a 2014 visit to Australia, the then-Duchess of Cambridge wore a pale blush pink Alexander McQueen day dress in wool cashmere which became an instant hit.
The knee-length dress features a peplum waistline, a pleated skirt, and three quarter-length sleeves. She paired the McQueen dress with her favourite LK Bennett Sledge nude pump shoes and a coordinating blush clutch.
Queen Mary of Denmark
Queen Mary of Denmark has returned home to Australia several times since she married King Frederik.
At a 2013 appearance at a Sydney Opera House gala, Mary wore a white ruffled dress from Danish designer Oly Yde. She also added a large black bow on her right shoulder.
