Finally, rejoice! Ever since Royal Central first launched in 2012, we have been vocal campaigners for one particular cause – that Camilla should be afforded the title of Queen Consort when Charles becomes King.
Now, 17 years after the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall wed at Windsor, common sense has finally prevailed – an acceptance within the Royal Household that Camilla will become Queen.
The person we have to thank for this new development is, of course, our current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
Spending 70 years on the throne means Her Majesty is the most qualified person in the world to know which titles each member of her family should be afforded.
In delightful fashion, The Queen has completely rubbished ill-thought statements Clarence House has released over the years, stating that Camilla would become Princess Consort when the time comes.
Clarence House’s most recent rebuttal to Queen Consort speculation was in 2020 when a spokesperson said “there has been absolutely no change at all” to plans for Her Royal Highness to become Princess Consort instead of Queen.
Royal Central called this statement out as nonsense at the time. Legally, Camilla would have become Queen Consort upon The Queen’s death in any event, despite the position Clarence house decided to take.
The process of trying to change the legal title of the wife of a king would lead to a constitutional crisis with dangerous precedents likely to be set for the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge.
The Queen’s statement on the eve of her Accession to the throne should end this speculation once and for all.
Camilla is one of the hardest working members of The Royal Family. Despite the Diana obsessed naysayers who claim otherwise, she fully deserves the title, and the House of Windsor would be a lot poorer without this dedicated, philanthropic, caring Duchess.
