Members of the Swedish Royal Family have attended a scaled-back Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm.
King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel attended the event in the Blue Hall at Stockholm City Hall without the traditional gala attire. The ceremony was scaled-back again this year due to the global health situation.
Usually, Prince Carl Philip, Princess Sofia and Princess Madeleine attend the Nobel Prize ceremony and events surrounding it, but due to the adaptation for health reasons, only the King, Queen and Crown Princess Couple were in attendance.
The ceremony was held in person and online. Prize winners spoke in the hall and via video recording when accepting their prizes in their home countries. This year the Nobel Prizes were handed out to those in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Winners this year were: Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi for the Nobel Prize in Physics; Benjamin List and David MacMillan for chemistry; David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian for physiology or medicine; Abdulrazak Gurnah for literature; and David Card, Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens for the Swedish Riksbank’s Prize in economic science in memory of Alfred Nobel.
Different musical performances took place during the ceremony with the Philharmonic Orchestra in charge of the music played like Mozart, Léo Ferré, and Elfrida Andrée. Performers included Bengan Janson and Anne Sofie von Otter.
While the majority of the awards are handed out in Stockholm, the Nobel Peace Prize itself is handed out in Oslo, Norway, with the Norwegian Royal Family in attendance. Ceremonies surrounding the Nobel Prizes always take place on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death on 10 December, which is called Nobel Day.
