Sweden unveils plans for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s jubilee

The Swedish Royal Court has unveiled plans for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Golden Jubilee.

Throughout 2023, the King will be celebrated for his 50 years on the throne; at the same time, the country will also mark the 500th anniversary of the election of Gustav Vasa as Sweden’s monarch in 1523.

Celebrations begin in January with a dinner at the Royal Palace in Stockholm with representatives from all of Sweden’s counties.

From February through September, the King and Queen Silvia will visit each of Sweden’s counties.

On 6 June, the country will turn its focus on King Gustav Vasa to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his election as the monarch and the beginning of Sweden leaving the Kalmar Union. Sweden’s National Day is held on 6 June each year to honour Gustav Vasa’s election. For National Day 2023 and to celebrate Gustav Vasa, the King and Queen will mark the holiday in Strängnäs before concluding the day with traditional ceremonies in Stockholm. However, the celebrations at Skansen Museum will be larger than normal in 2023.

King Carl Gustaf will also host a larger reception on National Day for Swedish representatives and the diplomatic corps. Instead of the usual venue of the Royal Palace, it will take place in the Nordic Museum to allow for more people.

The actual anniversary of the King’s accession to the throne will take place in September. On 15 and 15 September, celebrations will take place in Stockholm; a Te Deum will be held on 15 September in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. The King will also attend the Changing of the Guard and hear a tribute by singers in the Outer Courtyard of the Royal Palace. In the evening, the National Hall in the Royal Palace will play host to a large anniversary dinner.

The following day will see King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia travel through the streets of Stockholm in horse-drawn carriages.

The emblem of the jubilee has already been revealed by the Royal Court; it was designed by Elis Nystr̦m Рa student at the Royal Stockholm University of Technology. Several exhibitions will also open at the Royal Palaces throughout the year to mark the Golden Jubilee.

Further details of the celebrations, including the guest lists, will be announced in due course.
