Queen Silvia and Princess Madeleine visit Vatican to spotlight impact of AI

Queen Silvia and Princess Madeleine of Sweden have visited the Vatican City for a World Childhood Foundation conference calling for stronger protection for children everywhere from rapidly evolving technology.

Queen Silvia founded the Foundation in 1999 with the aim of helping to protect children from sexual abuse and to provide support and help to those who have suffered. Princess Madeleine has worked with the organisation since 2006 and is currently a board member.

Both Silvia and Madeleine travelled to Italy to attend a seminar hosted by the WCF in conjunction with the Pontifical Academy of Science and the Institute of Anthropology (IADC) of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

Risks and Opportunities of AI for Children: A Common Commitment for Safeguarding Children was an open discussion of both the benefits and risks of AI for children.

Queen Silvia urged participants to take heed now while AI technologies are still developing and we are able to make a difference, saying “The need for action is urgent…Yet none of us can fully grasp the true implications of generative AI for children growing up today. Now is the time to identify the risks and contribute to solutions to ensure artificial intelligence is used to benefit and protect children, not those who seek to harm them.”
