Prince Daniel of Sweden opened the extension to the Liljevalchs + art gallery in Stockholm’s Kungl. Djurgården (Royal Game Park) on Wednesday.
Daniel received a tour of the new gallery and spoke to Stockholm City Council chair Cecilia Brinck and museum director Mårten Castenfors, who welcomed him to the new art space.
The Prince spoke at the inauguration and praised the new space in Liljevalchs. He said the expansion would provide people with an opportunity to “see a larger number of exhibitions and simply experience more art,” adding, “It rhymes well with the pervasive idea behind the offer at Kungliga Djurgården: an abundance of nature and culture that should be open and accessible to as many people as possible.”
His Royal Highness later remarked: “For over a hundred years, the art at Liljevalchs has reflected the present; it has depicted nature, people and interiors, and questioned the dominant thoughts.
“In these halls, the light comes straight from above – and perhaps it reminds us that we need to look carefully.
“Because it is up to everyone who moves in these halls, to form their own opinion, to formulate their own opinion and feel what opens the mind and the world to you.”
Brinck and Castenfors also gave remarks, as did Stockholm’s property director, Anders Kindberg; architect, Gert Wingårdh; and designer, Ingegerd Råman. The group was entertained by musician Emelie Garber.
This was Prince Daniel’s first engagement since the Royal Family’s summer holiday. His next scheduled event is his nephew, Prince Julian’s baptism on Saturday, 14 August, in the Royal Chapel of Drottningholm Palace.
At the end of the month, he and Crown Princess Victoria will resume their visits to some of Sweden’s counties to see their COVID responses and show their support. The trips were the idea of King Carl XVI Gustaf, and members of the Royal Family will be travelling to each of Sweden’s counties.
