All the details for King Frederik and Queen Mary’s state visit to Sweden

The Danish Royal Court has shared the schedule for King Frederik and Queen Mary’s upcoming state visit to Sweden—their first since the throne shift earlier this year.

King Frederik and Queen Mary are due to visit Sweden between 6-7 May. A longstanding tradition amongst the Scandinavian monarchs is that their first state visits occur within each others’ countries.

King Frederik’s first official visit abroad came weeks after the throne shift in mid-January with a previously planned visit to Poland that was scheduled and arranged before Queen Margrethe announced her abdication.

The Danish Royal Court shared that the new King and Queen’s state visit will mark “the historic ties, the close neighborly relationship and the close relationship between the two royal families” and will focus on areas related to the “challenges of the future” including historical, cultural, and trade relations as well as technology and defence.

On Monday, 6 May, King Frederik and Queen Mary will arrive in Stockholm via the Dannebrog and be joined by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel aboard the Vasaorden—the Swedish Royal Family’s barge—for a formal greeting at the Skepps Bridge at the Royal Palace. There, they will meet King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and King Frederik will inspect a company from the Swedish Life Guards before joining a Swedish government delegation reception. Afterwards, they will join the wider Swedish Royal Family for lunch.

The afternoon will be filled with government and technology meetings: first a visit to the Riksdag for a meeting with the Speaker of the Riskdag, Andreas Norlén. Next, the King and Queen will meet with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. After that, they will accompany King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to the Royal Institute of Technology to learn more about space exploration and green technology.

King Frederik and Queen Mary’s first evening in Sweden will culminate in a gala dinner at the Royal Palace.

On Tusday, 7 May, King Carl XVI Gustaf and King  Frederik will visit the Stockholm Amphibious Regiment to see the Swedish military’s marine capabilities.

Meanwhile, Queen Silvia and Queen Mary will visit the Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde Museum to view an exhibition on Marie Krøyer, a joint project between Sweden and Denmark.

The King and Queen of Denmark will then attend a lunch at Stockholm City Hall with the mayor and the wider Swedish Royal Family. Their final engagements of the state visit include a stop at Forskaren, a life sciences centre, and the Nordic Museum, to view an exhibition about life in the Nordic region over the past 500 years.

Before departing Stockholm later that evening, King Frederik and Queen Mary will host a dinner aboard the Dannebrog for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. An official farewell will take place at the Royal Palace.

King Frederik and Queen Mary will undertake a state visit to Norway the following week between 14-15 May. Later in the summer, they will visit Greenland and the Faroe Islands, both a part of the Danish kingdom.
