King Carl XVI Gustaf addressed both Swedes and Ukrainians during his 2022 Christmas address.
As with the other monarchs across Europe, the King addressed the war in Ukraine.
He said: “From Stockholm Palace to Ukraine is only a hundred miles as the crow flies.
“Christmas is also celebrated there. But for many who live there, it is dark, cold and difficult. Parts of society’s infrastructure are knocked out. People have been killed, injured and subjected to terrible suffering.”
The King spoke of visiting Ukraine, particularly Kyiv, where Swedish Princess Ingegerd is buried in Sofia Cathedral. He also addressed the area of Gammalsvenskby, where Swedish descendants reside. He said this area has been hit hard by the Russian aggression and sent a special message to them:
“My thoughts and those of my family are with you – and with all your compatriots.”
King Carl Gustaf then addressed the upcoming year, in which he will celebrate 50 years on the throne. He said Sweden would face challenges: “This will affect many, especially those with small margins. And it will make demands on all of us. As citizens, and as fellow human beings.”
The King then mentioned the tour of the country he and Queen Silvia will embark on for the jubilee and said that his anniversary is “about Sweden. About Sweden at the time.”
His Majesty spoke of technological advances and said there must be gratitude to the previous generations for the foundations they laid for Sweden.
He concluded his message with his hope that the holiday will give people “a moment of peace and quiet and reflection. And that you can fast on what gives you joy and hope.”
