Queen Letizia’s style pick dominates as she pays tribute to cinema innovation

Queen Letizia made a headline grabbing appearance at the Ópera Prima film festival in Tudela with a very peculiar choice of fashion: a 2021 H&MxTOGA Archives skirt. The midi length skirt, sold for about 120 euros, features a Vichy squares pattern and, most importantly, a round opening on the right knee. This is not the first time that Queen Letizia has chosen pieces of clothing that leave parts of her skin exposed, like the hot pink dress she wore last month that left her abs uncovered.  But it ensured her latest engagement ended up being all about her style choice rather than the work she was celebrating.

Queen Letizia, accompanied by Spain’s Culture Minister Miquel Iceta, made her way to the province of Navarre, where she was welcomed by many local authorities, including the President of the Parliament and the Mayor of Tudela, as well as the Director of the Film Festival and some students of local schools that are taking part in the Festival.

The Queen then made her way inside the Moncayo movie theatre, where actress Carla Quílez opened the ceremony, before introducing speeches from the Director of the Movie Festival and the President of the Academy of the Arts and Sciences of Cinematography of Spain.

The central moment of the ceremony was next, and Queen Letizia got up on stage to hand out a poshtumous award to Pilar Miró, a director who passed away 25 years ago. Her prize was collected by her son, Gonzalo Miró, a TV presenter.

The late director received another tribute when her 1996 movie, “El perro del hortelano” (published in English as “The Dog in the Manger”), was played. The film was one of her most recognised creations, as it received a total of 7 Goya Awards.

Queen Letizia then held a brief meeting with authorities and VIP guests within the cinema, before the students present had a chance to have a brief conversation with her outside, shortly before she made her way back to Madrid, where she is expected on November 4th 2022 for a lunch in honour of the visit from the President of Paraguay.

The Ópera Prima Tudela Film Festival is organised annually by the city in collaboration with private cultural entities, and gives out five prizes: the “Ciudad de Tudela” prize is awarded to the best film, the “Príncipe de Viana” to the best direction, the “Especial del Jurado” to a rotation of categories each year, the “Juventud Tudela-Cultura” to the best movie according to secondary school students in the city, and the “Igualdad” to the movie that best promotes values centred around equal rights and opportunities for men and women, according to the Equality Council of the Tudela Municipality.

In addition, there is a section called “Su Ópera Prima”, which each year pays homage to a pilar of Spanish cinema. However, most newspapers and magazines in Spain were talking about the latest style pick of Queen Letizia as this year’s event came to an end.
