European Royals

Royal attendees expected at Grand Duke Jean’s funeral

With a state funeral set for 4 May at Luxembourg’s Notre-Dame Cathedral, European royals are expected to attend the Roman Catholic service.

From Belgium, King Philippe, Queen Mathilde, King Albert, and Queen Paola are due to attend. This is a natural choice as Albert was Grand Duke Jean’s brother-in-law and Philippe is Grand Duke Henri’s first cousin.

Grand Duke Jean married King Albert’s sister, Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium, in 1953. They were married until her death in 2005 from lung cancer.

Other members of the family also expected to attend are Prince Lorenz and Princess Astrid, Prince Laurent, Princess Léa, and Princess Elisabeth.

Naturally, Liechtenstein will be represented by Princess Margaretha (Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte’s daughter) and her husband, Prince Nikolaus of Liechtenstein with their three children. Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie will also attend.

Prince Rafael of Brazil has also announced he will attend.

From Denmark, Queen Margrethe will attend alongside her sister, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.

From Jordan, it will be Prince Hassan and Princess Sarvath, Prince Rashid, and Princess Badi’a.

Monaco will be represented by Prince Albert.

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands will represent the Dutch Royal Family.

The Norwegian Royal Court has confirmed that King Harald and Queen Sonja will both attend the funeral of Grand Duke Jean. Harald’s older sister, Princess Astrid, will also be there to pay her respects to the Grand Duke who ruled Luxembourg between 1964 and 2000.

From Portugal, the Duke of Braganza and his family will attend while Prince Jean, Count of Paris from the Orléanist claimers to the French throne will attend with his family.

Romania will be represented by Her Majesty Margareta and Prince Radu, the Royal Court confirmed to Royal Central.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain will make the trip to Luxembourg for the funeral.

Sweden will be represented by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

For the UK, Her Majesty The Queen will be represented by The Princess Royal who worked with Grand Duke Jean on the International Olympic Committee. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will also attend.
