Easter celebrations for Norway’s Royal Family

Norway's Royal Family

The Norwegian Royal Family celebrates Easter in Sikkilsdalen every year.

The Royal Mountain Chalet was once a gift to Crown Prince Olav on the day of his authority from the Swedish Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1924.

Ever since, the Norwegian Royal Family has spent time at the chalet, which is the family’s private property. They usually take a train to Vinstra and a military vehicle into the remote cabin to get there. The royal couple has previously made no secret that the house means a lot to them.

In more recent times, the royal couple have mostly been at the cottage with friends; however, their children and grandchildren were often there in the past. Then, they took part in the Easter ski race in Sikkilsdalen on Easter evening. The King also tends to be at the cottage with his hunting team in the autumn.

This year, King Harald and Queen Sonja were probably looking forward to Easter a little more, as their daughter, Princess Märtha Louise, joined them at the cottage with her daughters. They took the royal train together on Good Friday. The Crown Prince Family spent this year at their cottage in Uvdal, where they have spent many Easters over the past few years. They have also used the Easter holiday to travel abroad in the past, usually to a place with good surfing opportunities.

In 2014, King Harald and Queen Sonja went abroad during the Easter holidays. They secretly went to Easter Island, a place they had long dreamed of visiting. This did not become known until the autumn of the same year when the Royal House released a press release and pictures from the trip on what was supposed to be Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl’s 100th birthday. Heyerdahl is known for helping to make Easter Island known to the rest of the world.
