Crown Prince Haakon talks about the time he will be King

The Crown Prince of Norway has revealed he talks often with his father about the moment he will become king. On Saturday evening the Norwegian TV-channel TV2 published a longer interview with Crown Prince Haakon. The interview was recorded earlier this year and the Crown Prince talked about many things that concern him.

King Harald has been King of Norway since January 17, 1991, when King Olav passed away. The 83-year-old has previously stated that he has no plans to abdicate. The Crown Prince admits that he often thinks of the day that his parents, King Harald and Queen Sonja, will pass away. He remembers well when his grandfather, King Olav, died. The Crown Prince says: “But it is also something I think you can not fully prepare for. I am very fond of my parents, so it is not like I want to go and think about it all the time. In our family, this subject is related to everything we do. It has been so ever since I was little boy”.

In the interview, he is also asked if he is prepared to become the next king of Norway. The Crown Prince replies that he does not think he will be completely prepared. However, he believes that he will be a different king than his father. He justifies this with the fact that they have different personalities and are different people. His Royal Highness says: “I have to do it my way. I must not try to be anyone other than myself, then it will be a little easier. I have many bad sides. It is not like people do not know. I can be a little distant. There are definitely things that could have been better.”

The Crown Prince was asked if this was a topic he had discussed with his father the King. The Crown Prince answers: “Yes, but I have talked to him about it all along. In a way, we talked a lot about this in the 90s as well. He is very aware of the things and is very good to see my situation so that he facilitates it to go as well as possible.”
