Crown Prince Haakon pays tribute to fallen on National Veterans Day

Crown Prince Haakon of Norway took on a significant duty this week to mark a sombre anniversary for Norway.

On Wednesday, 8 May, Crown Prince Haakon marked Liberation Day by participating in a ceremony at the National Monument in Oslo. The ceremonies took place at Akershus Fortress, a thirteenth century castle.

He laid a wreath in honour of those who lost their lives in war during the ceremony. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre gave a speech, followed by soldier Kristian Nakstad’s speech.

May 8 is also National Veterans’ Day in Norway. As the Norwegian monarch is the head of the Norwegian armed forces, it is fitting that the Crown Prince took part.

It was announced in April that King Harald would be permanently scaling back on his engagements due to his health issues. We will most likely see Crown Prince Haakon taking on more of his father’s duties in the coming months.
