Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, 85, has undergone surgery for a broken wrist.

The Princess broke her wrist skiing on Friday, 17 February, and she has returned to the Netherlands from Lech, Austria, where she was holidaying.

The Government Information Service (RVD) stressed that the royal is in good health after the surgery: “The Princess is otherwise in good health and will recover from her fracture at home.”

The Princess will recover at her private residence of Drakensteyn Castle in Lage Vuursche.

As a result of the surgery, Princess Beatrix’s attendance at the celebration of the 160th anniversary of the Royal Home for Former Soldiers and Museum Bronbeek, scheduled for 24 February, has been postponed.

Beatrix, like the entire Dutch Royal Family, is an avid skier and spends time each winter in Austria on the slopes. Tragedy struck in Lech in 2012 when Beatrix’s son, Prince Friso, was buried in an avalanche.

Friso died from complications from the accident at home at Huis ten Bosch Palace in the Netherlands on 12 August 2013. He was 44.

Beatrix abdicated the throne in favour of her eldest child, Willem-Alexander, on 30 April 2013. She had been on the throne since 1980.
