Prince Charles of Luxembourgh, second in line to the Luxembourgish throne, got a playground named in his honour for the country’s national holiday on Wednesday.
The one-year-old tot was taken to Esch-sur-Alzette – the second largest city in Luxembourg – by his parents, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie.
The family attended a ceremony in memory of those who have lost their lives in war at the war memorial. Then, they opened the “Prince Charles Playground” that was created with funds from the city of Esch-sur-Alzette and the Fondation du Grand-Duc et de la Grand-Duchesse. Those funds came from people who donated money in honour of Prince Charles’s birth in 2020.
The Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple later attended a te deum in Fischbach.
Luxembourg’s National Day celebrations were scaled back again this year due to the global health crisis. A public celebration of Grand Duke Henri’s official birthday took place at the National monument of Luxembourgish solidarity (Kanounenhiwwel) with the Grand Duke, government officials, the judiciary, representatives from the diplomatic corps and representatives of the College of Aldermen of Luxembourg City.
The Grand Duke, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and President of the Chamber of Deputies, Fernand Etgen, all delivered remarks before 21 cannon shots were fired from the Fetschenhaff.
The Grand Duke paid tribute to all those who have lost their lives during the pandemic, saying: “Together with the Grand Duchess and our family, I would like to express our deepest condolences to all those who have lost a loved one. The merciless constraints of the pandemic often did not even allow us to say goodbye to our loved ones. This saddens us deeply, and our thoughts are with you in this painful time.”
He also stressed the importance of nature, working together and having a healthy economy in order to have a prosperous country.
