Grand Duke Jean hospitalised

His Royal Highness Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg was hospitalised a few days ago according to the Grand Ducal Court.

The doctors of His Royal Highness are satisfied with his progress and are confident he will make a full recovery.

In a press release, the Grand Ducal Court said, “His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Jean was hospitalised a few days ago following bronchitis.

“His treating physicians consider very satisfactory the recovery of His Royal Highness which will remain, however, a few days under medical supervision.”

His hospitalisation comes after Queen Silvia of Sweden was admitted to hospital on her birthday, 23 December, for dizziness resulting from a cold she had been battling for quite a bit of time. She was released early Christmas morning and is resting at their residence of Drottningholm Palace.

Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, who is 95-years-old, was on the throne of Luxembourg from 12 November 1964 through 7 October 2000. He became Grand Duke upon the abdication of his mother, Grand Duchess Charlotte.

In 2000, he abdicated in favour of his eldest son, Henri.

In January of this year, royals from all over Europe gathered in celebration of his birthday in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, Princess Beartix of the Netherlands, and Queen Sofía of Spain were among the guests in early January.

Grand Duke Jean will turn 96-years-old on 5 January.

His Royal Highness married Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium on 9 April 1953. Her father was King Léopold III of Belgium, and her mother was Princess Astrid of Sweden.

Together, Jean and Joséphine-Charlotte had five children (three sons and two daughters): Princess Marie-Astrid, Grand Duke Henri, Prince Jean, Princess Margaretha, and Prince Guillaume.
