Queen Margrethe gets festive as she unveils this year’s Christmas stamp

The Danish Christmas stamp of 2022 commemorate a double royal celebration. It marks both the 50th anniversary of Queen Margrethe`s reign and the 300th anniversary of Fredensborg Palace. Therefore it was only natural that it was the Queen of Denmark herself who was to unveil this year’s Christmas stamp.

This was the 110th edition of the Christmas stamp to be unveiled.

In recent years, Crown Princess Mary has attended this ceremony on behalf of the Danish Royal Family. However this year, she and Crown Prince Frederik are on an official visit to Vietnam. Crown Princess Mary is the royal patron of the Christmas stamps. But given the special significance of this year’s edition, it was only expected that Queen Margrethe would reveal it.

The Christmas stamps of 2022 bears the title “A Christmas greeting with the heart”. The symbols itself on the Christmas stamps therefore also draws inspiration from the three Christmas stamps that the Queen herself has designed. The angels date back to the Christmas stamp in 1970, the wreath from 2003 and the pigeons with the Christmas cards appeared on the stamps from 2015. In the middle stands Fredensborg Castle ready to celebrate Christmas.

Two special guests, 13 year old Casper and 12 year old Ella, took part in the announcement of this year’s stamps. Their job was to receive Her Majesty the Queen at the entrance to the Festival Hall and present her with a bouquet. Afterwards, they went on stage to talk about their stay at the home funded by the sale of Christmas stamps.

Every year since 1904, the Christmas-Stamp-Fund has published a special Christmas stamp edition, which aims to raise money for children’s homes. On the first Christmas stamp in 1904 was a portrait of Queen Louise, who throughout her lifetime had shown an interest in charity, especially for the benefit of sick children, which was in line with the idea behind the Christmas stamps.
