His Highness Prince Nikolai of Denmark has gotten his driver’s licence.
The news was revealed by the Danish newspaper Billed Bladet on Tuesday after the Royal Danish House confirmed the information to the publication. Nikolai, the older son of Prince Joachim and his ex-wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, recently passed his driving test; the Prince has been studying for his licence for several months. For the time being, the 17-year-old can only drive with someone over the age of 30 in the car with him.
The eldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark will turn 18 on 28 August of this year. At that point, His Highness will be allowed to drive alone in a car without the restriction of supervision.
It remains to be seen if he takes after his paternal family who has a history of loving the accelerator. In 1988, his father was speeding in France and wrecked which resulted in a broken collarbone for his uncle, Crown Prince Frederik. Prince Joachim came away from the wreck unharmed. Prince Joachim has also participated in car races in the past.
Prince Nikolai of Denmark, Count of Monpezat was born on 28 August 1999 in the Rigshospitalet in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. At birth, he was third in line to the Danish throne after his uncle and father. He now ranks seventh after the birth of his four younger cousins (the children of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary). His parents divorced in 2005, and they share custody of him and his younger brother, Prince Felix. His father re-married in 2008 to the French-born Marie Cavallier. He has two younger half-siblings: Prince Henrik and Princess Athena.
