Prince Joachim and family to leave Paris next year, but will they return to Denmark?

Prince Joachim announced that his family would leave France at the end of his term as military attaché at the Royal Danish Embassy in Paris—though he revealed his family might not return to Denmark.

In an exclusive interview with Danish tabloid Billed Bladet, Prince Joachim said that his term ends next summer, and the family will leave France at that time.

Prince Joachim told Billed Bladet that his family would move from Paris, but returning to Denmark isn’t certain. All the Prince said when asked was, “We will see.”

The Danish Prince, who has made headlines in recent months for his reaction to the news that his mother, Queen Margrethe, plans to strip his children of their titles of Prince and princess on 1 January, was hosting an event to promote Danish interests in France when he spoke with the magazine.

Prince Joachim was announced as the military attaché to the Royal Danish Embassy in Paris in 2020, and at the time, his term was announced for a three-year period, with the possibility of an extension, though with his comments this week, it seems his term will end as contracted.

The family has lived in Paris since his appointment, with Princess Marie working with the Danish Embassy as a special Cultural Representative and their two children, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena, attending school in the area.

Prince Joachim told the reporter, “I definitely feel that I am in a good place in my career. It is exciting, it is a joy, it is a privilege, first and foremost, to help promote and maintain the good interests and the good cooperation we have between Denmark and France.”

He added, “After two and a half years at the post here in France, I have a contact network both among French authorities, mainly the military, but also among large French companies. I know I can call them up and ask them to show up myself because ‘it will have your interest and also be good for the collaboration.’ I am very proud to be able to help forge a red-hot iron at the moment.”

Prince Joachim and his family’s future in Denmark is up in the air following Queen Margrethe’s shocking decision to remove her grandchildren’s titles.

In an interview in September, the weekend after the announcement, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie spoke of their shock and sadness and revealed that their relationship with Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary is distant. For their part, the Crown Prince Couple has refused to elaborate on the statement, only saying that they talk with the couple and otherwise the relationship is private.
