King Frederik X ascends throne

King Frederik X now reigns over Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Moments ago, Queen Margrethe signed the declaration of abdication in a special Council of State. King Frederik X has now succeeded his mother on the throne after a 52-year reign.

The change in throne took place at Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the monarchy for the Danish kingdom. King Frederik X and Queen Margrethe were joined by Crown Prince Christian for the special ceremony.

In an hour’s time, King Frederik X will appear on the balcony at Christiansborg Palace where he will be proclaimed by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. He will then give a speech and reveal his royal motto.

Queen Margrethe’s motto for 52 years was “God’s help, the love of The People, Denmark’s strength.”

The Royal Family is now meeting with members of the government, armed forces, faith and others from the kingdom in a special reception before the public proclamation takes place.

King Frederik X arrived at Christiansborg Palace with the new Queen Mary and his son, Crown Prince Christian shortly before the abdication ceremony took place.
