King Frederik X promised to be “a gathering king of tomorrow” in his accession speech.
Speaking from the balcony at Christiansborg Palace moments after his proclamation, King Frederik paid tribute to his mother and vowed to give his all to Denmark.
Reflecting on the historic reign of Queen Margrethe, the King said that “For half a century, she has kept track of the times with our shared heritage as an outlet.
“She will forever be remembered as a regent beyond the ordinary.”
Following in Queen Margrethe’s footsteps is a job King Frederik said he’s been “approaching my whole life,” and one that he takes on “with respect, pride and great joy.”
He said: “It’s a deed I will do my best and carry through the confidence I encounter.
“I’m going to need all the support I can get.
“From my beloved wife, from my family, from you and from that which is bigger than us. I face the future with the knowledge that I am not standing alone.”
And then King Frederik X announced his royal motto—the mission statement of his reign: “United, bound, to the Kingdom of Denmark.”
