Queen Margrethe II of Denmark abdicates

Queen Margrethe of Denmark has abdicated.

Just after 2pm, in front of a Council of State at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, Her Majesty signed a Declaration of Abdication.

She was succeeded immediately by her son who becomes King Frederik X.

The abdication brings to an end a reign of 52 years.
