It was announced by Elisabeta Palace this morning that His Majesty King Michael of Romania’s “general state of health has worsened considerably.”
His daughter, Crown Princess Margareta and her husband, Prince Radu have returned to Switzerland to be by the 96-year-old King’s side in his private residence. There the Romanian Royal Family will have meetings with His Majesty’s doctors to discuss his treatments and to obtain advice for moving forward.
The full statement by the Palace stated,“Yesterday afternoon, TRH Crown Princess Margareta and Prince Radu returned to Switzerland, to the private residence of His Majesty.
“King Michael’s general state of health has worsened considerably, with a significant decline in his physical strength.
“This week, the Royal Family will have a series of meetings with His Majesty’s doctors, in order to discuss the King’s current medical treatment and obtain their advice in the present circumstances.”
The King retired from public life last year and was diagnosed with chronic leukaemia and metastatic epidermoid carcinoma. It was said then that he would face a lengthy treatment.
This past August, the Royal House announced that “King Michael is in a fragile but balanced state,” and they added that the King continued “to stay daily under close supervision of physicians, medical staff of various specialties, and in the presence of devoted members of the staff of His Majesty’s House, stationed in Switzerland.”
His wife Queen Anne died at the age of 92 in August of last year. They had been married for 68 years. Sadly, His Majesty was too ill to make the trip back to Romania to attend her funeral.
King Michael reigned in Romania from 20 July 1927 to 8 June 1930 and again from 6 September 1940 to 30 December 1947. In 1947 he was forced to abdicate by the government which at the time was controlled by the Communist Party of Romania.

Considering his age , infirmity , and the fact he is dealing with two different types of cancer hospice ( palliation only ) might be the most humane way to proceed , with the King’s assent of course. In the United States to qualify for hospice one must not have a life expectancy of more than 6 months.
We must all pray for this truly remarkable man.
