Queen Rania poses question to world about young Syrian children

Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan has asked a poignant question on her Twitter today to the world about the young Syrian children caught in the middle of the country’s bitter and brutal civil war.

The Queen of Jordan said on Twitter this morning, “What has humanity offered the six-year-old Syrian child except fear, deprivation, and death? .”

She also tweeted a link to a UNICEF press release about the Syrian civil war that has been raging on for six years. Previously, the Queen has said that Syrian children and refugees “are experiencing something worse than death.”

UNICEF has reported that “grave violations against children in Syria were the highest on record in 2016” with 652 children killed – an increase of 20 percent from 2015. Many children were killed when their schools or hospitals were bombed. Over 850 of them were recruited last year to fight on the frontline. Tragically due to the war, there are now close to six million children depending on humanitarian assistance. UNICEF has pleaded for the international community to find an immediate political solution to end the ongoing war.

Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, explained, “The depth of suffering is unprecedented. Millions of children in Syria come under attack on a daily basis, their lives turned upside down. Each and every child is scarred for life with horrific consequences on their health, well-being and future.”

Queen Rania has been very vocal and passionate about the plight of Syrian children and refugees caught in the middle of the war between President al-Assad’s government forces and the rebels. She has given numerous interviews, written op-eds, and spoke to international leaders and at seminars regarding the situation.

She has said in the past, “Millions of people have had the misfortune of being born in a place so wracked by violence, poverty, persecution, or insecurity that they had no choice but to leave.”

In September of 2016, Her Majesty spoke at a high-level meeting in New York where she urged for more support for Jordan and refugees. She told those assembled that global collaboration and partnerships needed to be strengthened in responding to the Syrian refugee crisis. The Queen then said, “This crisis is not just about refugees. Nor will the solution simply be for refugees. This crisis is about human dignity.”

In a press release after the meeting, Her Majesty’s press office said, “She called on the audience to partner across sectors in order to empower refugees and enable them to become independent, so that they can to contribute to the economy, and eventually rebuild their homelands.”

In one op-ed she wrote for Global Mom’s Relay, she said that the millions of refugee children around the world deserve better than what has been occurring to them. You can read her powerful post here.
