Flags at royal palaces lowered for The Queen

Royals across the globe have had the flags of their countries flown at half-mast in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

The King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar, issued a Royal Command for prayers at the monasteries and that the flag at the Royal Palace in Thimphu be flown at half-mast.

Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri has ordered the flags at the Grand Ducal Palace and Berg Castle to be lowered until midnight on 10 September.

Prince Albert of Monaco joined his European counterparts in ordering flags be lowered. The Princely Palace said: “As a sign of respect to the British authorities, the Princely flag will be flown at half-mast until the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on 19 September 2022. The same arrangements will be made for the flags of the Government, the Archdiocese, the National Council and the Town Hall.”

In Norway, Queen Elizabeth’s second cousin, King Harald, ordered that the Norwegian flag be flown at half-mast on Friday, 9 September and the day of the funeral at the Royal Palace of Oslo.

In nearby Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf also ordered flags at half-mast at the Royal Palace of Stockholm on 9 September in The Queen’s memory. Queen Margrethe of Denmark issued a similar order that Danish flags be lowered at the palaces at Amalienborg in Copenhagen.

Spain’s King Felipe has said that the Royal Standard will fly at half-mast at all royal residences when he is present.

In the United States, President Biden has issued a proclamation that all U.S. flags must be flown at half-staff (as it is referred to in the United States) until sunset on the day of her burial. The White House, the American executive building and home to the President, is also flying the American flag at half-mast.
